Again, what is your alternative? There is nothing stopping you from chaining VPNs with TOR. VPNs aren't a new concept, though they are more commonplace and cheaper today. People do stupid shit to give themselves away regardless of how secure their connection may be. All it takes is one little bit of stray EXIF data or metadata.

More than you can trust no protection whatsoever assuming they aren't a shell company for an intelligence agency asset. There are also open-source VPN software solutions you can try to run yourself if you are more technically inclined. If they want to track you, they can track you easily with methods that are embedded deeper in your system than at the packet level. It is much more likely you can be targeted and infiltrated with malware that can capture keystrokes, system data, and other system input of any kind from all sources including cameras, mics, files themselves. Even a simple spearphishing attack can defeat security savvy members of the intelligence community enough to compromise sensitive servers and data, and that requires no physical access to the machine.

There are several VPN providers these days which offer kill-switch functionality if your internet connection at all falters. They prevent any identifying info from being leaked when properly utilized. VPNs may not be the safest or most fool-proof method, but it is the currently accepted method.
