Some people blame immigration for this. I would say immigration is perhaps 5% the problem, while 95% is fucked up trade deals that benefit globalist. Just look at the trade deals the USA has made over the last 30 years. These trade deals opened the USA market to cheap labor nations and allowed the USA to do offshore manufacturing at no net lose to the business.

Before all these disastrous trade deals tariffs, foreign nation taxing and other forms of taxes made producing goods off US shores impractical. Thus keeping jobs in the USA. Post trade deals companies had zero incentive to manufacture in the USA but all the benefits of selling to US consumers.

All these trade deals did was give companies zero reasons to be in the USA aside from selling to US.

I'm gonna say "both"

Oh crap, totally didn't connect the first part, "Most of those living on the edge". What a weird way to say what they wanted to say, i.e., not 68% of all woman. Sorry for the mistake :(

... still scary stats though.

dingomeat

That isn't what "protectionism" is

Protectionism refers specifically to tariffs

canbot

Absolutely. But you can't have a discussion about which laws are bad and which are good when all you get is people passionately proclaiming that government regulation is bad, it is destroying the country, red tape this, over reach that. No one ever talks about specific laws, they just want everyone to rally behind a call to end "red tape". Another problem is people using regulations to solicit bribes. Your shit can't pass inspection because you didn't grease the wheels. It can be infuriating. I understand why people get so passionate, but I can't agree with vague and broad statements about it. Especially when there are a lot of justifiable laws that will always be attacked this way.

For example every few months there will be a story about how the government wants to ban private farms, big agro is killing the small farmer, pleas help us fight the big government. And after you wade through all the propaganda you find out it is about the ban of sale of unpasteurized milk. And everyone up votes it, and the comments are filled with sympathizers, and signatures are collected and letters sent to congress. But the reality is the unpasteurized milk sells for a higher price like organic produce; it has no nutritional value over pasteurized milk but that doesn't stop people from believing it does. After all the sellers don't directly advertise it as such, who knows where those websites come from that claim that. But no one mentions that unpasteurized milk can kill you before there is any hint that it has gone bad. No one tells you that you can't refrigerate it like regular milk and drink it a week later. You assumed you could, and so it is your fault that your kid is in the hospital.

canbot

Damn government and their protection of consumers.

flarflar

As a business owner for 8 years it's FUCKN hard and complicated to start anything so many hoops and so many times being fucked in the ass. Three years ago forgot to file quarterly taxes for my state. Filed yearly come the next fuckn year my state says I own the maximum amount for a small business of my size $3500 when in reality it was probably $90 or so after expenses and all. I can't fight it because I got a letter a YEAR later saying I didn't file the quarterly ones and if I can with in the filing year marked the year before it would be fine. Also it was post marked the week before they just sent it a year late.

Bindlestiff

charles murray wrote a book about systematic civil disobedience to break the system. his idea is to basically start a fund and use it to pay lawyers to fight the government in court on behalf of people even though the people broke the law and then pay the fine for them afterword. with enough money and enough lawyers they'd grind the system to a half and make the laws effectively unenforceable.

I've heard of this idea, I knew of groups that didn't buy train tickets and just pooled money to pay for the fines when someone got caught without a ticket. It was apparently cheaper with the fare price V. ticket inspectors ratio.

JustTruthful

I think they forgot to change the definition of the American dream.

gosso920

It's not "every nigger swimming back to Africa, with a Jew under each arm" anymore?

pizza_mine

My take home pay was going up a little each year until 2008. Then it began to go down, now my take home paycheck has barely reached the level it was in 2008, not quite but almost there. It's been 8 years and I earn less than I did in 2008. I haven't changed jobs. I like this job, I've received raises and increases, my gross pay has gone up each year but my taxes have gone up, health insurance and every other benefit costs a lot more. I've lost tax credits and deductions that used to compensate. So my take home pay is lower. This sucks, I can't wait for the Obama administration to leave and some sensible governing can begin again (not Hillary for goodness sakes!)

edistojim

How about that "hope and change"? Hows that working these days?

dingomeat

I don't disagree with you, but the way you're presenting your ideas is really trite.

ThizzBoss

What a great contribution to the thread

edistojim

Just the facts. Too bad the halfrican pretend President will go down in history as the worst of the worst as far as leadership and economy. Or do you have stats that say different?

poly

GWB

ThizzBoss

I didn't say I disagree, I said it was a stupid comment that is better suited as a bumper sticker than a discussion thread

edistojim

The discussion is that our economy sucks, am I correct? What has Obama done to foster a vibrant economy? Although he doesn't directly impact our economy and jobs, he makes the climate favorable for a robust economy and job market. His climate sucks. He has done everything he can to explode the government regulation of capitalism, its choking the populace.

ThizzBoss

See, that's a better comment than "durrrr hope and change am I right?"

edistojim

So whats your take, you criticized my delivery, which is fine, but do you have an opinion? We've had 7 long years of the present regime , I've had enough.

EarlPoncho

the result of unfiltered immigration and H1B visas

Apathy

Don't forget jobs being moves overseas or in other nearby countries.

EarlPoncho

yes good point. highest tax rate in the world which leads companies to leave

PeacefulAssassin

How often do we really see these big companies give more benefits and raises to their employees once they have tax breaks, more often than not they just horde the money they are saving.

I am all for capitalism, but let's not forget people's greed either.

EarlPoncho

people's greed? it's greedy to want to keep more money that you earned?

you have a contract with your employer. if you don't like what you're being paid, you can either leave, find a different job, start your own company or negotiate higher pay. if a company chooses to let you walk and horde money for themselves that's their own business because they earned that money. sick of people talking about a company like a human. it exists to make money. wanting to keep as much of it as possible is not a negative thing

etzefeck

the Psychopaths at the top did not make that money, the peons running the entire company made that money. they deserve a directly proportional increase in pay when there is an increase in profits due to their output. it's obvious now that greed is what is destroying us because they keep shooting their employees in the foot so they don't have to pay them anymore and when their employees get too uppity they fire them and hire some new ones for minimum wage.

the people at the top don't deserve the money they're getting, they're stealing it from the people they're exploiting.

EarlPoncho

it's a willing contract between two parties. if you're really generating so much wealth then you're a fool to be doing it for someone else.

PeacefulAssassin

But the people running the company are human and seem to think less of people who are under them. And it is greedy to horde money and not to reward those workers who have worked for them for years and helped make the company successful. Reward your wakes for their hard work and they'll work even harder.

Apathy

It's also the biggest market in the world. The only issue is that companies get to have their cake and eat it too right now.

senpaithatignoresyou

This was the result of Greenspan's experiment in the 90s. All that "economic gain" in the 90s that people attribute to Clinton, was a farce.

I suspect part of why he manipulated the market the way he did, of why he kept bailing out speculators, was to inflate market growth and make 401ks look better than pensions. Keep in mind that the baby boomers retire in mass soon, and their pension expense will break some of the bigger companies, companies with deep political roots.

Berneke is just as bad as greenspan. There will have to be a new fed chair, one that will have to raise interest rates back to pre 90s levels.

poly

Usury is bad mmmkay

senpaithatignoresyou

Is it really?

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

You have two choices with usury: have banks, or live as a communist. I don't see many sander's supporters running to Venezuela now do I?

spookybm

Not gonna happen there, Yellen...
