I'm confident enough in my ideologies that I'm not afraid of being subverted by a different one. And I'm confident enough in the American tradition of free speech and open debate that I'm not afraid of other rational people being subverted. On the other hand McCarthyism struck at the heart of the ideal of free speech, as does the similar fear mongering politicians use to this day.

I think he was killed, at least in part, because he tried to undermine the Federal Reserve by starting a new currency of United States Notes, instead of the Fedrral Reserve Notes, bringing the printing of money back under government control. This is simlar to why Gaddafi was killed, and Saddam.
