ok, here is my theory:

[I don't feel bad because all of it would be out dated to drones and space etc. by now]

The united states was using commercial airplanes re-purposed into intelligence gathering planes--in effect using the "human shield" tactic [e.g. having weapons caches in mosques]. This all went wrong, and Russia/"Russia" downed a passenger plane. Why else down an obviously civilian aircraft?
