Many of us believe the REAL reason for the Great Northeast Blackout of 2003 was MS-Blaster. Specifically, the SCADA system used for communication between different parts of the power grid to request more or less power from each other communicates through DCOM (which rides on top of NetBIOS), so they had this port getting forwarded from the open internet.

Crashing holes in in NetBIOS were known since the late 1980s -- we used to crash Win3.1 boxes sending random data to port 139, yet our utilities still had this open to the internet in 2003. MSBlaster spread through this vector and enough SCADA system machines were simultaneously rebooting from the crashes caused by this that the power grid couldn't keep up.
