how old are you? how could you not know this?

Lightfromdarkness

I don't live in the states so was completely unaware that practices like this still goes on. I thought it had all ended after Vietnam so when I caught that video it surprised me. I can't imagine living in a country where this is law and to be honest find it quite frightening with the way things are heading.

Empire_of_the_mind

ok, yes, if you're American you would definitely know this. also yes it's super fucked up.

consider that 1 - it only applies to men (yay equality) and 2 - you can't legally buy alcohol at 18, but you can be forced to murder people in war.

it's actually unfortunate that we have an anti-draft policy. this forces certain population to experience the brunt of war whilst allowing others to not have any person contact with you (enabling their support). drafts are far more equitable.

troll.

I had to register for Selective Service in 2010 as a requirement for my senior seminar in high school.

Charlie_Prime

I registered with Selective Service 30 years ago because I intended to work for the Federal Government.

There is a check-box on employment applications for jobs with Federal agencies, Federal subcontractors, or Federal loans like for agriculture or small-business that says: "Have your registered"?

It's best to comply with this archaic demand. You never know if 10 years from now it might trip you up.

Lightfromdarkness

Yeah but the last time it happened was probably in the early 70's. It hasn't been in use for a while, and not only that, but also making illegals register as well as allowing them into the US military. Seems to me America is expecting something big to happen. Or is it perhaps after hearing all the soldiers who returned from Iraq and Aghanistan people just don't fancy signing up any more.

Selective Service is old news and has not been used since Vietnam. Draft Evasion is the Feonly mentioned and there have been no draft dodging prosecutions since 1987

Lightfromdarkness

Probably because it was last used in 1973 from what I see so that makes sense.

Edit: I stand corrected, Just saw that Carter brought it back in 1980.

voiceofflawedlogic

This has been the law (18-25 year old males registering for the draft) for a long time now. I had to register more than 20 years ago.

Well blow me, I honestly thought it had ended in the early 70's after Vietnam but looking into it I can see President Carter brought it back in 1980. Well I can honestly say I haven't seen anyone talk about it in that time. So much for the land of the free I guess.

The whole illegals without documents is certainly a new thing though right.

theotherguy

I knew a guy about 10 years ago who got his citizenship while serving.
