I think we have a sock puppet infection brewing here on Voat ( conspiracy )

submitted 2017-01-29T02:12 by meowski

One thing I've noticed over the years when posting stuff about 9/11 being an inside job- there are certain down/up vote patterns that I associate with the presence of sock puppets and bots.

What I'll see is a large number of downvotes almost immediately, then over time the upvotes will come in at a normal pace. What this indicates is that trolls are scanning the site for keywords with software and immediately knock it down with downvotes to try and bury the post or comment before people have a chance to read it.

Subsequently the upvotes will trickle in at a normal pace, but those posts and comments will not get the exposure they would have, if they started off with a few organic upvotes.

I'm now seeing this bot-like behavior here on Voat. Just a heads-up, the trolls are here. There are ways to detect and eliminate these users, but it's not trivial. They have significant resources like large numbers of IP addresses and money to pay kids to sit around all day and post fake astro-turf propaganda. It's a serious problem for sites like this. Reddit was overrun by sock puppets, both internal and external. I'd hate to see that happen to Voat.
