It's a rainbow. The shockwave condensed the water vapor in the air into water droplets.

MrG13

Just a shockwave most likely. It being in a dusty desert area probably made it more visible.

Wouldn't an EMP have stopped the camera from filming almost immediately?

'Safe distance'

Seems like a fairly large and fast piece of debris comes hurtling right down the road they're on in the clip.

All military actions are safe in the 21st century, lol

I think the flash to the left is a lens flare from the incoming projectile. It's clearly moving at very high velocity, and in a nearly vertical trajectory. Probably launched from high altitude. There are some secret low orbit platforms that exist and we know about the electromagnetic rail guns the navy has. I don't see anything that would indicate is something other than a kinetic weapon though. My money is on a rail gun projectile or a supersonic missile moving at around mach 5.

Edit: definitely a projectile weapon, not an IED. Look at the frame before the explosion. The top of the guard rail is illuminated by the incoming projectile. That's light from something glowing very hot- either rocket exhaust or atmospheric friction heating from ultra high velocity projectile, such as from an electromagnetic rail gun.

NamelessCrewmember

That's a hell of an explosion for an "improvised" device.

Well_then

Looks like I'm gonna have to be that guy.

All I'm saying is it's strange the (soldiers?) and surrounding environment seems mostly unfazed by that hoo hah.

goatboy

Either an orbital accelerator or they've shrunk an accelerator to fit on a jumbo jet.

Edit: Now that I think of it, they might have been able to stuff one into one of those high performance dirigible hybrids Boeing and Lockheed were working on a few years ago. The explanation of those for loiter/recon missions was always suspicious.

goatboy

Could have been a particle beam accelerated weapon. When they get stuff flying at relativistic speeds, the kinetic projectile doesn't need much mass to have devastating effect.

AnthraxAlex

Seems more like a large IED to me. A visible shockwave like that is fairly normal when the atmospheric conditions are right.

NamelessCrewmember

That's not normal. The big light flash just left and before explosion is super weird.

Likeitirish

Yea what the hell is that? In slow-mo it occurs a full frame or 2 before the shockwave is even visible. Spooky
