This is true, but consider this.

Let's say that I own a light bulb factory and make a light bulb that last 20 years. Now everyone in the world wants my long-lasting light bulbs. After every one buys my bulbs, then I have no more customers to keep me in business. I wait year after year for someone to buy a bulb, but no one does because they have not burned out yet an do not need replacing. After 4 or 5 years, I close the factory. All of the other light bulb factories have closed because they have no customers. After twenty years, the light bulb start to burn out. People want new bulb, but there are no factories to make them because they all went out of business long ago due to lack of customers. Now there is no place to buy bulb and no one to make them.

Yes I know that explanation is a little over simplified, but the point is valid. If a product never wore out, then the company that make is would cease to exist.

And this short-sightedness is the reason human greed exists in the first place, along with the systemic raping of our planet for resources. Besides, a single factory would still exist due to a small demand of lightbulbs. Human ingenuity will come up with other lightbulbs, create something completely new, or move unto better projects.
