https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslight_(1944_film)

The term originates in this film, which is being rereleased this coming weekend. The husband lied to and manipulated his wife to think she's going insane so he could search for and claim sole ownership of jewels hidden somewhere in their house. The lights in the house were all powered by the same gas line, and while he searched around upstairs it caused the lights downstairs to flicker; and to hide his search, the husband insisted to the wife that she can't believe her eyes, that the lights were not actually flickering.

I think the goal of psychology is gaslighting.

Maybe if you have a really bad therapist

I think the technique of fracturing the mind into constituent parts which can disagree with each other is a dishonest attempt to establish that no answer the patient gives is honest, but must be evaluated by the therapist. I'm also not happy with the composition of the mind/soul (since that is what the psyche is). A frontal lobe can be removed. A superego cannot. I think the whole study has dubious relationship to the material world.

Just an opinion.

That has been argued. That the analyst just gaslights the patient. "All these problems you say you are having are really rooted in your childhood relationship with your mother and father." And that may be true in some cases. But in other cases, you know, shit just sucks regardless.
