Just found this place. Getting comfy cause I love it already

Mumberthrax

Glad to have you here. :D

threesevens

This is refreshing thank you. Good mods make a sub great. Bad mods on a power trip or compromised in some way ruin a sub. Users need to feel like the mods have their back and if not satisfied have a say in who is in the mod position. Anyway, keep up the good work. I have high hopes for this sub.

Edit: Question: Shills and disinfo agents will invade the site eventually. Do you think anything can be done about this or is it just something conspiracy sites have to deal with?

Mumberthrax

Thanks! I'm quite excited about our community's future here as well. I think that the fact that a lot of folks are here with a similarly optimistic attitude helps too - because really it's our community's spirit that makes any place like this great.

You're absolutely right that there is the issue of propagandists or marketers, the issue of disinformation and misinformation. Our community is somewhat unique in this respect because of things like Operation Earnest Voice, and the projects like those which Cass Sunstein advocates for. I don't know if it's something that conspiracy sites will always have to deal with - I'm not a prophet - and it is something that they currently are challenged by once a certain level of traffic/attention begins to hit them.

I believe there is cause to be optimistic about the ability of the community to adapt and handle these sorts of disruptive influences. I believe that with the cultivation of effective rules and community guidelines, an emphasis on sorting information and requiring supporting evidence, a focus on community engagement and active participation, courtesy and respect, and education about the kinds of behaviors and habits that disruptive people employ, our community can be strengthened against such things - whether they are paid to disrupt, do it for casual amusement, or do is out of a sense of righteous duty.

I think too that having a culture that is proud of itself and has just cause to feel that way, having high morale, will help to strengthen against such things.

Strengthening the community against these disruptive elements is one of the three foundational goals I've set for myself as a moderator here. The other two being effective information organization and a culture of participation/engagement. They all sort of feed into each other. I think that with time and energy put into them we'll come up with some novel strategies. :)

Bonus rambling - feel free to ignore it!

So because I have a bad habit of writing really long things instead of being concise, here are some ideas I have currently, which I hope will be the first of many such strategies for resolving this challenge:

  • encourage courtesy and respect - discourage flaming, personal attacks, trolling, bigotry

  • encourage critical thinking and demanding sources for claims, encourage dissent and discussion

  • generally study the writings on these sorts of disruptive strategies and actively educate the community about them

  • be vigilant about not letting people cry shill at the drop of a hat, as that permits caricatures of our community to flourish where someone is called a shill simply for disagreeing.

  • Focus on actions and behaviors, not unbridled paranoia. In my case, I was under suspicion of being an infiltrator as a moderator. I asked to be judged by my actions - if they are beneficial to the health of the community then so long as I am not doing some subtle harm it doesn't matter where my paycheck comes from. I could very well be a bad guy, but so long as the community is empowered to keep an eye on me and keep me in check, then it probably does not matter.

  • Vigilance is needed to keep an eye out for disruptive behavior, and communication about these sorts of things should happen regularly. That's part of the reason why I made /v/conspiracymeta .

tl;dr: Yes, I think things can be done to deter it and reduce the harm it causes. I have some ideas and will be working toward them. : ]

gryph0n

The difference between voat and reddit is so large. This type of interaction with the community will only help to grow this site.

Mumberthrax

I'm glad you approve! I hope you'll stick around. : ]

k_digi

This is a great sub, running perfectly so far.

ZionistShill

I don't know about how other people feel about this, but I would prefer if there are no mods here that came from that other website.

joseph177

What is your take on Zionism?

AlmightySonOfBob

Big kudos for the way you're approaching this. This is why I think this subverse will end up better run and have better quality than it's Reddit predecessor.

Mumberthrax

Thanks. I'm glad you approve. : ]

critias

I'm not a fan of discussing things about a sub in another sub. It's censorship through containment.

Can someone define overt and racism for me. Are we not allowed to call things for what they are even in a rational and civil manner?

Mumberthrax

Meta discussion is not restricted on /v/conspiracy . /v/conspiracymeta is not censorship, it's an optional tool for aggregating meta discussions for easier access.

I've been thinking that the rule about racism ought to be reworded to be less ambiguous. I took a quick glance at your profile where you state that you're antisemitic. You're welcome to hold whatever beliefs or opinions you prefer. We have decided as a community that we don't want racism or bigotry on this subverse, so any comments that mock people for their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, etc. or that attack a group like that in aggregate, etc. are not wanted here.

I know there is the Jewish conspiracy theory, and that there are many who subscribe to the idea that Jewish people are all inherently evil and trying to rule the world. I do not personally agree with this, and I recognize that it's a conspiracy theory that may tie in to other conspiracies discussed here. So long as discussion on these sorts of conspiracy theories is phrased as objectively as possible, viewed in a sort of academic matter, then they may be ok... but it's a thin line to walk.

Critical commentary about Israel the country is fine. Critical commentary about the USA the country is fine. Attacking or mocking someone for being Israeli or being American or Swedish or anything else is not ok. Attacking someone for being a political leader of a country is probably fine. I'm not sure if this paints a clear enough picture or not.

If you want to express something that you think might be racist but aren't sure, and it's really really important to you, you could message a moderator and ask if they'd be willing to look it over first. Or you're welcome to create your own subverse specifically for discussing race-related conspiracy theories, or create a totally unmoderated conspiracy discussion subverse. If you do, let us know so that it could be considered by the community for a link in the sidebar.

As long as it's optional.

We have decided as a community that we don't want racism or bigotry on this subverse, so any comments that mock people for their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, etc. or that attack a group like that in aggregate, etc. are not wanted here.

I understand that blanket statements are pointless but there is a recurring theme on many groups that can't be ignored. There are many topics that revolve around multiculturalism, corporatism and genderism that shouldn't be ignored. I have no intention on unwarranted attacks or pure racism. I do, however, believe that ignoring reality is a threat to not only free speech but to the future of humanity and life on this planet. We have a responsibility to acknowledge the truth.

I know there is the Jewish conspiracy theory, and that there are many who subscribe to the idea that Jewish people are all inherently evil and trying to rule the world. I do not personally agree with this

It doesn't matter what you agree with. It matters that there are certain results that have been common throughout history. It also matters that there are reasons for the current plights that plague humanity. I do not intend on ignoring systemic causes. The ideas behind war involving the West and israel and the middle-East are pure fact.

Critical commentary about Israel the country is fine. Critical commentary about the USA the country is fine. Attacking or mocking someone for being Israeli or being American or Swedish or anything else is not ok.

So the fact that a group of people are behind atrocities is okay as long as we only recognize the government above it all? Seems like bullshit. The israeli condition is based on the people who are backing up the ideals that support the government that make up the supremacist state. To ignore the people who have been relocated and that contribute to the problems we now face is folly.

If you want to express something that you think might be racist but aren't sure, and it's really really important to you, you could message a moderator and ask if they'd be willing to look it over first.

I want you to re-read that statement and tell me it isn't part of the new wave of cultural norms that is driving the US into the ground. I do not require your permission to state the truth.

Or you're welcome to create your own subverse specifically for discussing race-related conspiracy theories

I am not interested in race-related conspiracies. I am however interested in universal truths and observable fact.

Maybe, if you plan on running a subreddit, you should look into running a news one. Conspiracies are often based in more than reporting what is acceptable or sponsored.

Mumberthrax

Our rules, including the rule about bigotry, have been around since this subverse was created. They were established by consensus from the community, and the concepts behind them have never been in dispute until now so far as I have seen. If you would like to offer an amendment to the rules, you are free to propose a new version for consideration, either through messaging one of the mods, making a post about it here or on /v/conspiracymeta , or creating a pull request directly on our github project .

critias

I'm not disputing them, I'm asking for clarification. Define consensus.

Mumberthrax

con·sen·sus (kən-sĕn′səs)
n.
1. An opinion or position reached by a group as a whole: "Among political women ... there is a clear consensus about the problems women candidates have traditionally faced" (Wendy Kaminer). See Usage Note at redundancy.
2. General agreement or accord: government by consensus.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/consensus

This consensus was reaffirmed during our brainstorming discussion posts just prior to the latest reddit-influx where the community made it clear they do not want racism to erode our subverse.

daneelr

I recently got temporarily shadowbanned on Reddit for downvoting Flat Earthers, so I'll probably start popping up here more often (same username as on reddit). I'll make sure to downvote Flat Earthers on /v/conspiracy as well, though I haven't seen too much of their crap here just yet.

joseph177

The flat earth stuff is such obvious disinfo, pissing in the well. I can't believe it got any traction whatsoever, but it does expose just how powerful the shills have become.

PrivateJoker

operation mockingbird shit. just like reptilians, toss out all sorts of garbage and people will only remember the super crazy stuff and assume everyone believes it.

ItsSwiftty023

Well you guys are doing a fantastic job. Keep it up peeps!I gotta say that this is my favorite subverse. I come here to get all my information, cause we all know we wont hear anything thats posted on here in the news.

Mumberthrax

Thanks! I hope you remember to take everything posted here (and anywhere else, but maybe especially here) with a grain of salt. Look for evidence and reliable sources. Remember limited hangouts and disinformation are a real thing, so remain skeptical.

RedHawk

I really appreciate what you guys are doing, I hope this community continues to grow in a anti-censorship environment.

I was an active user on /r/conspiracy in reddit but the overall political censorship there has made me less active there. I hope this place continues like it is, IMO the less active moderation there is the better this place will become. I think all views should be expressed here.

33degree

Hell yea. I just deleted my reddit account today. I'm here to stay.

deathcomesilent

Ditto. I used that script that overwrites all your comments, then changed my password to random numbers and letters so I can't be tempted back. Reddit is gonna have to be an example to the internet that we do not tolerate censorship.

Tleilaxu_Ghola

You have any more info and a link to that script? I have been thinking about wiping my comment history on reddit and cutting the tether now that this place seems to be a lot faster and more available now.

deathcomesilent

Here is a permalink that will tell a bit more about it, I'm gonna try and find a link so you don't have to trust an internet stranger's cut-and-paste script :)

https://voat.co/v/Conspiracy/comments/170819/681313

edit: here's the user script https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/10380-reddit-overwrite

Tleilaxu_Ghola

Thanks. Script worked like a champ.

deathcomesilent

Glad to hear it!

33degree

Oh shit. What's the app called?

deathcomesilent

The following is the default message the script replaces your comments with, but you can customize it:

This comment has been overwritten by an open source script to protect this user's privacy.

If you would like to do the same, add the browser extension TamperMonkey for Chrome (or GreaseMonkey for Firefox) and add this open source script.

Then simply click on your username on Reddit, go to the comments tab, and hit the new OVERWRITE button at the top.

deathcomesilent

It's a user-script for the firefox extension grease-monkey. I'll see if I can find the link.

Pryce604

Deleted mine two days ago. Welcome!

Mumberthrax

Happy to have you here. :D

AlmightySonOfBob

I hope you guys keep it a good subverse. It's nice to see you're taking the communities ideas and wishes seriously.

Peglius

Well I think your doing a good job, and I appreciate the way you have treated the current mod team. I was a little suspicious of the circumstances that brought you to us. but it seems like you have a genuine interest in keeping this an active, useful platform for discussion, and information sharing. Thanks and keep up the good work

edit - words are hard

PrivateJoker

I agree :)

nokilli

Or is it a genuine interest in seeing to it that rule #2 effectively forbids discussion of THE conspiracy.

Mumberthrax

Thank you. It really means a lot to hear that. : ]

I'll continue to do what I can to contribute - and I'll continue to work on improving my teamwork skills, I know they have been somewhat lacking.
