Edit: Title is misleading as fuck. They were monitored, no mention of sabotage?

This is interesting. Remember when Anonymous targeted Mastercard and Visa for their refusing to allow donations to Wikileaks? They caused a lot of money lost in the service outage that ensued for all of a couple seconds. Thousands of people in prison, going to prison, or being prosecuted for it.

And then our government financially sabotages other governments? To the tune of billions of dollars? No repercussions.

Someone sounds more like a criminal here, and it's not anonymous. Though I do not agree with targeting financial institutions, holy fuck the NSA is evil.

Caboose_Calloway

And yet France is going forward with TISA. (at least no indication to the contrary yet)

Sorry for using the shortcut " sabotage ", but, according to wikileaks, "[this document] also mandates the interception" where interception is described as "To stop, deflect or divert".

It's not described as just peaking on it.

As a French, I consider this doc extremely serious, we're way past fear mongering here. This also confirm some info I heard from Airbus salesmen who told how their however secret transactions seemed to be hijacked then forwarded to Boeing who'd in return used to making more aggressive proposals which usually cost Airbus their deal. That'd be what I call sabotaging a deal.

yourhero7

It's not described as just peaking on it.

It absolutely means just peeking in on it in this case. The US is trying to keep track of large financial deals, and it mentions nothing about stopping the communications from going through. In this case, intercepting most likely means that they have to be able to view the documents.

Fact_Checking_Alien

I see. That sort of explanation would be rather well warranted if one is to claim sabotage, and provide evidence of it. Are there no other articles you could submit listing examples and financial losses of exact contracts sabotaged by the NSA?

penisse

The one about Airbus vs Boeing came to mind but I heard it on the French official radio.

MCVoat

It's not just misleading but it's flat out incorrect and sensationalist fear mongering.

Fact_Checking_Alien

Well, I downvoted it for that. It even mis-led me until I re-read the thing after hitting ctrl+F and searching "sabotage". I then read the specific lines mentioning the amount and they referred to monitoring.

Let this be a lesson to me. Not only can I not comment or vote until I RTFA, I can't do so until I've had my morning cup of coffee. God fucking damn it, I know better than this.

Trip

If that's true I believe you are right. To put this to scale, imagine if the United States found out that Israel sabotaged contracts costing it a billion dollars.

I can't believe this actually happened.

KoKansei

When there's that much money on the line, the only question is why wouldn't such a power be used?

The shit we will hear about the NSA in 30 years in history books will make the Soviet secret Police look like boy scouts.

Trip

You're definitely correct about that. The shit we hear about the NSA RIGHT NOW makes the soviet secret police look like boy scouts to be honest.
