I'm using this opportunity to post a comment I keep forgetting to. Everyone has seen a movie or TV show in which an attempt is made to "trace the call." Isn't it interesting to think that calls were just being connected between parties without even knowing who the parties were. Are we to believe that quick calls were simply not documented because they were too quick?

I think the central office has always known who was calling who even before the call was connected as far back as when switchboard operators kept their switchboards in their bedrooms. Sounds like more movie magic to me.

On a side note, when you call 9 11 the audio recording begins before the call is even connected.
