I think a western nation attempted a terror attack by hijacking the plane remotely, but it was foiled when another nation hijacked it back. By then, the passengers were all dead so how the plane was disposed of might not have been critical. The attempt by a "private" firm to locate the plane on the sea floor looks to me like Russia attempting to stop the madness through an intelligence front. The primary secrecy and reason why the FBI took over the investigation despite having no authority to do so is to keep the public in the dark about non interruptable autopilot.
