In 1984 they were trying to raise the ethics of journalists? hahaha they failed abysmally.

In 1983 the western media - all of it - was heavily engaged in a concentrated campaign to have mental hospitals closed. Scientologists from around the world wrote thousands of letter to them, phoned and went to their offices with the most bizarre and fake stories of abuse that made the Salem witch trial accusations look frivolous. They took the words of incredibly sick people with tales of medieval torture that could never be corroborated by anyone. The Doctors association decided it was mass hysteria and that if they defended themselves it would make them worse. I have a relative that was a long term guest in a large psychiatric hospital and family visited often. So did other patients families. Psychiatric nurses may be a little off, but they were all demonized beyond belief. They succeeded and thousands and thousands of patients, probably millions around the world were kicked out on the streets. Most of them went straight to drug dealers or suicide. Some patients sued to try to assert their right to long term treatment and shelter. But of course lost. Scientology thought they were going to get millions of new recruits out of it.

I think it was after that they moved on to satanic preschools and in the 90s it was recovered memory syndrome. More unsubstantiated tales of gruesome torture.

Newspapers were good and the writing was better when they trained talented people that had NO college education. The 1980s was when college killed journalism. It just took it a while to die.
