They wanted government contracts and figured he was their man. LBJ delivered on the contracts and of course became VP. Just a shot away from the oval orifice.

With or without Johnson's knowledge, but I lean toward the former, they arranged to have JFK taken out. Of course JFK had said he would bring home the 700 or so troops we had in Vietnam, and also famously said he wanted to break the CIA into a thousand pieces. I think it was about 14 months after 11/22/63 that the non-event called the Gulf of Tonkin happened.
