Protecting the citizens from corrupting ifluences was always at the foremost of Plato and Khomeini's minds. They both believed that they could mislead the public for the sake of protecting the public. To this end, Plato believed that the guardians of the state should have the privilege of lying . . . for the public good. Guardians know better than the common man, and therefore are better able to discern what they should and should not know. Indeed, Plato stated that "the first thing [to do in our state] will be to establish a censorship of the writers of fiction."
