This was written in response the initial adoption of the net neutrality rules 2-3 years ago but the points remain valid.

Because net neutrality is not as cut-and-dry as this meme makes it seem. It's basically just corporate welfare for websites at the expense of ISPs. While I agree that under the current regulatory scheme, cutting this one regulation might be bad for consumers and allow the ISPs to do bad things, in a free market, ISPs should be allowed to do what they want and if customers demand net neutrality it won't have to be enforced by the government. What we should really be campaigning for is an end to all the regulations, including net neutrality, that stifle competition in all areas of the internet. If we had robust competition for internet service provision, consumers would be able to get what they want, which might include net neutrality, but it also might be lower prices at the expense of net neutrality.

The net neutrality debate is simply large monopolistic websites fighting with large monopolistic ISPs. As consumers we should be uniting and fighting against both instead of allowing them to pit us against each other.

It's not possible to have a free market with ISPs. Please stop spreading that bullshit. The current ISPs got their monopoly fair and square after buying out the competition and then bribing governments to keep it that way, all in the free market before regulations.

That is the free market/capitalism. As for choices, sure why not? Lay your own fucking lines, buy your own datacenter, buy your own equipment, then beg for permission to lay every inch of the cables. Oh you're gonna do wireless? Those towers aren't allowed to be just anywhere and you need to have a good enough bribe to access limited frequencies already owned by the ISPs.

So...it’s not possible to have a free market but the current market participants got to where they are through the free market?

Also please tell me more about this time before any regulations existed.

B3bomber

You funny. 1st comers got their way. Free Market also means if you're my competition I send someone to break your knees.

Obama-era FCC rules allowed for more Government-controlled censorship of the internet. All The Trump admin is doing is eliminating regulation of this nature. Obama's "Net Neutrality" manipulates the term the same way the "Patriot Act" allowed indefinite detention of actual U.S. Patriots.

ISP's are already spying on citizens for the government and have been since the 60's, and that behavior can only be tackled with laws that respect the privacy and speech rights we are supposed to be guaranteed by the 1st and 4th amendments. Net Neutrality is the biggest crock of shit ever and it's frustrating how ignorant people are of this.

Thanks for the clarification. I need to do further research on this it seems.
