Sessions is obligated to enforce federal law, but he CAN interpret federal drug laws under the interstate commerce clause. What I mean by this is that the federal government gets its power to regulate within a state via the interstate commerce clause because the courts have ruled that commerce within a state can effect the commerce of another (the courts have overreached their power and expanded federal power). However, state MJ legalization laws specifically state that you must not take MJ out of the state. Thus state legalization laws attempt to keep MJ as an instate commerce activity, thus nullifying federal power.

This is how Sessions should be approaching the MJ issue. He should be policing the "interstate commerce" aspect of federal drug law, NOT the instate commerce, where legalization has limited the scope to an instate activity. This would satisfy Sessions obligation to enforce federal law, because the federal drug law gets its power from "interstate commerce" regulation, not "instate commerce regulation".

This is the only way to solve the coming backlash against Trump and Sessions. Otherwise, Trump has to dump Sessions, or lose his support base.
