Twitter is about 2 things: monitoring and influencing. They monitor posts to look for trends in public attitudes so they can frame arguments in the most effective way and they can also flag particular individuals who might pose a threat to whatever goals or policies they are pursuing. They influence by trying to push propaganda with a "grass roots" facade. Whether businesses want to use it to make their product the latest "must have" or you want to stoke outrage to get the public behind new policies -- influence is crucial. An earnings statement is not the only way to measure whether a service is valuable. In fact, this proves that Twitter is nothing more than surveillance/propaganda because a real business would go under if they didn't consistently show both profits and an increase in ROI.
