I think the deaths may have been faked, but it seems that people do tend to be playful after deaths of loved ones, at least briefly. The night my nephew died in a car accident, many of my family and friends of my sister and her husband were gathered in their house. They, his parents, were of course in grief, but everyone else was not at first. Maybe because it was a large gathering. I remember making jokes and others did too, I think. My nephew's brothers and sister were playing and running around having fun. I don't know if that's called the denial phase of grief, but it was real.
