Conspiracy aside, isn't weather control the next step for our civilization? I mean, it would be incredibly beneficial to be able to effect weather patterns. We wouldn't need to relocate cities, we could elevate the production capacity of currently sparse regions, etc.

As a science nerd, I think it's a really neat idea.

isn't weather control the next step for our civilization?

What could go wrong?

piv0t

it's neat, until someone decides to charge a million dollars for a month's worth of rain to farmland, etc

HilariouslyViolent

I mean, so it has the possibility to be abused. Is that sufficient reason to stunt scientific progress? Personally, I don't think so.

piv0t

this is /v/conspiracy - never question conspiracies!

WhoreGaryBettman

What if the progress had been made 50 years ago, and it is being abused as we type these messages to each other?

I don't think we should be fucking with the environment at that level (even though we already are; see China a few years ago when they buried their cities in snow). Perhaps we should take stock and change our current paradigms (use of fossil fuels and big agra etc) and repair some of the damage we've caused to the planet before going down the path of hubris and arrogance that most modern science keeps leading us down.

Geo-engineering is absolutely a fucking insane field; to think you can predict the weather and how it all works and accurately create your own (WITHOUT NEGATIVELY IMPACTING NEIGHBORS OR THE ENTIRE WEATHER PATTERNS IN YOUR AREA) is.. just.. stupid.

HilariouslyViolent

So... Because we can't do it right now, means we shouldn't research it for the future? That doesn't make sense.

I'm not saying go play Thor and call down lightning today. I'm saying that it is surely a worthwhile research topic because of the possible benefits.

Spiral_Out

We're trying to fix a symptom of a bigger problem (that being how we operate on a daily basis). Our weather shifting isn't the issue, it's how it shifted and how to stop it, today, now. Every day we continue our modus operandi, we kill the planet and she's reacting back. We need to fix our shit-system now then maybe we won't ever have to try and modify the weather. No need to go and make the weather more unpredictable than it already is.

themanlyhegoat

I totally agree - if anything, we should be spending more effort on learning how to control weather

Flesh_Mechanic

It would be cool, but knowing humans, it won't be the right way of going about it and we'll cause snowpiercer.

themanlyhegoat

Snowboard powder all year round, yay!!!! Everyone's dead except for a caste system train and a crazy guy at the front... oh.

Sciency

Yeah there's a more than bit of metaphor/social commentary going on in that movie.

With that said, you could board behind the train on a rope like a wakeboarder. That could be fun.

WhoreGaryBettman

I'm fairly certain that there are branches of the government or military that know exactly how to control the weather. But they are the last people who should have this power as the last thing they will use it for is anything beneficial.

It is nothing but another weapon for them to utilise.

Bill Nye is gonna have fun with this
