Thank you for this OP! I noticed the body length monitors for ads with cameras in them, but didn’t consider this would happen. ( I’m in Australia).

Is there a way to fuck with this?

old news OP, they've been doing this for a few years now, at least around my neck of the woods

"They" sell baseball caps with led lights in the bill of the cap that foil cameras. Your face shows as a ball of white light. Security will probably ask you to take it off or leave though.

Time to invest :)

Ours flash "RECORDING" periodically, implying that they aren't 'always-on'. TBH, it doesn't seem to be coordinated with particular activities; i.e., it didn't say "RECORDING" when I paid.

I'm considering bringing a ratty old shower cap to put over the camera, to get their reaction.

  1. Stay the fuck out of walmart. This is common sense anyway.

  2. If you have to go to one of those shit-holes, cover the camera with your hand.

  3. Stop using your card and start paying with cash. It's far far easier to mange your finances that way.

So is this any store that wants to see my receipt? How does this play out?

Depends on your state laws. In some instances, you don't need to prove ownership once you have paid. In others, they can't detain you unless they can prove you were shoplifting. In still others, showing proof of ownership might be required for membership (like Sam's Club) but if there's no membership, they can't do that. In some places, they might be able to make you show a receipt. You need to look up your state laws.

Where I live, you don't need to prove ownership. So for the infrequent times I go to Walmart, I either ignore them, hand them the receipt and walk off without it, or demand a refund on the spot. The only exception I've made for this was when they hired a guy with down's syndrome and he was happy to do his job. I wasn't about to shit on his day simply because he couldn't possible have known (or maybe even understood) the law regarding it. And, you know, he was happy to have a job so who am I to rain on his parade, you know?

Shizy

That was sweet of you regarding the Down's syndrome guy.

I noticed this two days ago... Sadly they already have my biometric data on file. I did contract work at their data centers years ago.
