Diversity companies can over bid by 10% any winning contract. Government offices sometimes let the lowest bid win only to be corrected by a court.

What city official wrote off on safety checks? Blame the firm all you want but reality is that somebody ok’d this. I bet that who ok’d this connected to that company.

Who thought it was a good idea to implement the piece that would ensure this wouldn’t happen? Why was it scheduled for next year? Why is it a good idea to stress test this without blocking off public access to it?

The math worked on paper but the implementation of the project is were it failed. The person who worked out the math should have known that stress testing would fail or have a possibility it would. Unless they didn’t have experience and were put on the project to push an agenda.

cosmic_climb

I don't know of any structure that need a reinforced concrete roof other than a bunker. Holy shit.

brandnewset

Weren't they stress testing it during the collapse while traffic proceeded unimpeded? That's just zany.

Poohwhisperer

I’ve worked Stem all my adult life, women can’t cut it. I’ve worked with one woman engineer that had the intellect, she was from Romania, and she prolly had a penis..

nomadriders

I've seen a few Russian, Chinese and Iranian women that can cut it, but yeah no western women ever in my career of many years. It's mostly cultural and not genetic in my opinion.

Shreklich

As a woman in stem myself, I find myself agreeing with you.

I showed this Diversity Aesthetic Design to my wife, and the first words out of her mouth were "why is there a penis in the middle of it?"

jesus_is_lord

The penis of the cult of Osiris? someone forgot to install it

Well.. I guess it's true... "Diversity is a strength"
Hypocrisy led to them paying for their hubris... should have include 50% men... to keep the women in CHECK.

Good job, ladies! I see why my calculus professors failed 90% of the women.

StandswithanAR

Evidently, diversity is also Mass. Excess Mass.

cattarhero

AA engineering degrees, AA hired company, most of the workers were probably AA hires. What could go wrong?

Demonsweat2

There are a lot of contracts that only minority owned businesses are allowed to bid. I'm not saying this is the case but, I have been denied being able to bid due to whiteness.

Hydrocephalus

There was no NEED but didn't you see that women say that women are superior engineers because they can add style to their designs. I mean seriously, with a bridge that stylish who cares if it falls down and kills a few people?

MartinTimothy

As well the concrete clad structural members and the bolt supports served no practical purpose and only added to the weight.

This was a very long span and then they used very heavy material, rather than steel trusses they employed heavier concrete trusses as part of the bridge’s aesthetic rather than structural design, there was also a concrete roof adding even more weight, steel is about one tenth the weight of concrete." MiamiHerald .

"The bridge was designed to look like a cable stayed bridge in which cables attached to a tall tower or pylon support the bridge deck .. each of two spans should have been self supporting," bisnow.com .

"There are no bridge suspension cables or support cables, they are aesthetic 16" stay cable pipe painted white so the bridge so it doesn't bounce when pedestrian traffic walks across, these pipes are bolted in place with no support cables inside them. Jerry Cantrell @ YT .

In any case the pylon that was to support the shorter section over the canal at the University end was nowhere near completion, it and the tower should have been built before the span was put in place, the second shorter section of the bridge between the tower and the Uni might have conceivably held up under its own weight.

However in the interests of safety both sections should have been supported until the stay wires - guy ropes whatever - were bolted on where after stress testing and fine tuning the structure could be comissionable .. someone was rushing the project it seems who wanted a visible monument to his [her] ego?

klobos

What's funny about this is that it's just a pedestrian bridge. I mean it looks nice and all but when you step back and realize that it is just for people, you're left scratching your head as to why it needs suspension cables when no other pedestrian bridge in the world needs one. They have been built longer and taller, and some even very nice looking, and there have been zero problems(engineering wise at least).

nomadriders

Good point. They could have easily built such a bridge with steel too, why the heck did they choose concrete? It's not the 1960s anymore.
