Something had to fund the heroin crisis in the US.

By dissappeared, you mean stolen.

The government only ever admits to around 10% of the loss/damage.

in this example they actually initially admitted to 1/3, which is quite surprising

It fucking pisses me off in the military. I try to save every nickel and dime when I work on aircraft, but then the part I'm replacing costs the tax payers 3x more than it should.

Other things that annoy me is selling perfectly good military surplus to civilians, then turning around and buying new stuff. Did you know we still have 5.56 ammo from the Vietnam era? Why not use those as training rounds? What about all those ammo cans? I guarantee we're buying new ones just as fast as we're selling them. Use the recovered JP-8 in diesel equipment instead of giving it back to the refineries.

It's all a slight of hand game. Similar to the lemonade stand analogy, if units don't spend the money they have allocated, they don't have it in the budget the following year. So everyone shuffles money around they don't need, to buy products and services they don't need, to ensure they get the same or larger budget the following year, "just in case they need it"

Unless of course they're about to go on a deployment, then there is pretty much an unlimited budget, resulting in so much more frivolities
