As much as I hate facebook, this is their analytics team doing their job. Their job is to cross reference all data they can get and match it to other stuff. My company does similar stuff, but we don't delve into your social network accounts and crap - I'd quit if that were the case.

Bad form, yes. Should facebook have that data? NO. Any company worth their security team's salt, they would have done a check of facebook and done a "NOPE NOPE NOPE" right the fuck out the door, well before anything got official(which actually may have happened). We don't even have the stupid ass facebook badges on our site for a reason.

There are those of us that still care about your data and hold true to protecting it. Should my company try to pull something like this, I would quit in protest really fucking quick. I also know most of my team would quit as well, leaving the company gutted on their IT side.

People, you have to stop SHARING your fucking data!

For instance: My wife went in for a procedure a year and a half ago and a secondary company called up asking questions. We verified who they were and answered their questions. They had our insurance info then they wanted both our SSN's. I fucking lost it. The lady on the phone heard me lose it from across the HOUSE. I seriously lost it. After 30 minutes of arguing, I finally relented and gave up my SSN and a few minutes later the call was complete. The lady called back 35 minutes later crying. She had gone to her boss and her boss gave her the party line "yup, required..." Then she went way beyond that and called the companies lawyer hotline - NOT required as they had my unique identifier: my insurance info. She apologized profusely and said she edited our file and wiped our SSN's off our file as per my wishes and admitted she hated her job anyway and would be looking for a new one since everyone lied there.

Even the insurance companies lie to to their own.

STOP SHARING YOUR INFO! Go into the hospital? Did you know you get handed a piece of paper about your tissue and blood samples? Those become property of the hospital for research and reproduction. Fun times!

Facebook isn't doomed. That's just a pipe dream. Do you know what happens when a government takes away bread and circus from the "citizens"?

It might slowly fade into obscurity over the next 20 years, but it will not come to a screeching halt. They will get a slap on the wrist for this and then the political parties will change power and the data gathering will ramp back up. The problem is not the violation of peoples privacy, its that the data was sold to the wrong groups.

Imagine the implications of what they would do with said data. A BBC article explained the goal was "you could see if a sick person didn't have family or friends nearby to help so the hospital could arrange a visit."

In reality, it would be "oh, this person has horrible eating habits, we need to enforce some sort of diet.", "This person does have a Facebook, let's commit them for being abnormal.", And the most obviously dirty one, "This person is acting depressed, oh look, they own guns! Better revoke those before someone gets hurt."

Sidestepping HIPAA would be a major win for those who wanted to declare effectively everyone to be "mentally unable" to own guns.

That is a direct violation of HIPPA. They knew this and proceeded anyways. But the dumb fucks still jerk off to Facebook....

Facebook isn't doomed, the average user, of which there are billions, doesn't cae.
