Their focus was getting people onto their platform.

In 2004 search was a good service, ads made sense. Asking people for all their personal data, and trying to sell them ads might have been a bit off-putting back then. People get used to posting using the "service". Eventually ads do makes sense. They have to be able to make some money. We don't care as long as the service is free. 10 plus years really change how people think about something.
