Psychiatry has its usefulness but it’s scope should be more narrow than it currently is. I liken it to a hospital: great for emergencies like psychosis and suicidal depression, but a fuckload of people could deal with their issues through regular therapy and lifestyle change.

Some mental disorders can be tested for. People with bipolar and schizophrenia respond poorly to dexamethasone suppression tests because they have central glucocorticoid receptor “desensitization”. A single antipsychotic dose can fix this overnight. I know - I’m bipolar and I’ve seen it.
