Hey, we aren't talking about free speech on the internet, we're talking about free speech on reddit . Maybe the government SHOULD host one of these 'sites someday and promote free speech there, but there will always be another boat to jump to. My favorite example is XFree86 becoming X.org--if you have a nerdy mind, it's well worth taking a look at. The tl;dr is that the company behind XFree86 made some licensing changes, a handful of smart people took the previous version (under the previous license) and said 'screw off, we're going to do what you're doing but run it right', and it's now the dominant choice in the *nix market.

I have high hopes for this place, and I really feel like I can reach some people if I get my participation right and in the right places, so we'll see. I know that even once the company's trademarks, hardware, and domain name are dried-up husks that remind us of the better times, we'll look around at wherever we've ended up, and see familiar faces. The smartest people, the people that made the magic happen, are always long gone and working on something new by the time the spark goes out of a company like it did with Digg.

Of course, definitely true. I'm here because it's a smaller community too, not JUST because of the censorship and lack of deference to moderators. I'm just starting to realize that, even though I still think Ellen Pao isn't a fantastic person, that I owe her an apology for all the hate. To be on the board, make a decision, and then let a CEO take the heat without any sort of public statement--that's just a low fuckin' blow.
