The "nobody died at Sandy Hook" narrative is serving the same purpose as the "flat Earth" narrative -- it discredits alternative opinions that conflict with the "official" lies. The same may be said for the "Twin Towers were brought down by planted explosives" narrative, by the way, in spite of the popularity of that one.
