One of the safest areas to be in during the war was in the German run labour camps while heavily populated civilian areas, specially in Germany, such as Dresden and Nuremberg were the least safest areas to be in because they were constantly under heavy bombardment by the allies. So, in reality, while the German gentile were being massacred daily, the jews in Auschwitz were enjoying the swimming pool and the theatre there.

I was born in Poland and I can tell you this.Before Germans showed up in 1939 every single town over 10K population in Eastern Poland had at least 20% Jews living there.That was legacy left for days of Russian rule there for 120 years.My own hometown of Lomza was nearly 30% and many villages East from it were in part Jewish as well.Those were not rich Jews-they were mostly poorer Jews and Hasidic Jews.After war in late 1940s census there was only about 200 of them left alive and none in villages.Ashes of most of them are in Treblinka and there are mass graves scattered around.When I was a Scout we cleaned up those we found.

There were many smaller Ghettos set up by Germans in 1941-43 period-all of them have been liquidated by end of 1943 and many Poles have died hiding Jews all the way until 1944 when Russians came.

There was no grand plan by the Nazis to exterminate all Jews. Maybe some individual Nazis dreamed about such an achievement, but it was never practical and the Nazis never tried to initiate such a plan in an official way. There was no wholescale program of extermination at the work camps where the Jew and Christian enemies of the German state were kept -- they were work camps, where war work was done. Prisoners were forced to work for their food and lodging, and sometimes the work was hard.
