Was this Old Testament story really about sacrificing children to Moloch? I don't quite buy the testing of Abraham's obedience as a reason for the command. It really scared me in Sunday school when I was a child. I thought I would be next.

It's always bothered me too. Maybe it's a corrupted part of scripture. Or maybe it is meant as a parallel to God's sacrifice of his own son.

The back story is that Abraham's father was supposed to give him to an evil king (moloch means evil king) to be killed, but his father gave a newborn child of one of his servants instead. James described Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his own son as justification by works arising from faith.

The bible is designed to scare you onto obedience. So, you will be a good goy, and turn the other cheek.
