OP not real versed in logic to state that A = B in this situation. One would first have to accept as fact that NASA is a force for good. Then we have to accept that what they "must know" is so alarming that this proposed intervention is the best chance the world has. On the other hand, with a 5-4 Supreme Court in faver of constitutional originalists some powerful Democrats may be willing to trade the consequences of treason convictions with wiping out the entire country.

UndeadTed

That's nuts, pushing water into the magma may very well CAUSE and eruption

WildOneinVt

Yup, so why do it?

Quickdraw08

I live about 300 miles from West Yellowstone and little earthquakes have been getting active for the last couple of years. There is a site that I saw that a geologist was tracking ground height and a mound started showing up a year or two ago showing 10 inches of height that went out about 100 miles from the old faithful area. Now we have geysers that haven't erupted in 50 years going off again. Being this close to the Yellowstone cauldron makes me nervous but I do have a few mountain ranges to help protect an initial blast but after that we are all in trouble if it blows.

dontforgetaboutevil

Yeah... I had thought the title was hyperbole but they admit it in the article. One mistake and they set off a near extinction level volcano. Why in the fuck is this being allowed?!

Jimmycog

NASA has been useless for a very long time. The have been working for Defence Contractors since the beginning.

BoraxTheFungarian

So, in actuallity, they're making a money grab by trying to establish a super-volcano power plant, and if they happen to trigger a worldwide catastrophe, they will probably have plans to exploit that too. Yeah, let's fund that!

TwitterBannedIt

Wilcox also remarked that the drilling project must be handled with utmost care as a slightest mistake might actually trigger the eruption the scientists are trying to prevent.

Wow, Wilcox is an ASSHOLE.

ShadowWatcher

It's too late for that bullshit NASA, we know you're not working for us!

Tallest_Skil

Reminder that magma reacts explosively when exposed to water.

Reminder that they’re pumping water into the super volcano.

they must know something we do not in order to try this

No, they just want to purposely kill us all.

GranimalSnake

They just want to poke at it and pour some water in... what's the problem?

heuristic

Google water converting to steam quickly and industrial accidents. Lmk what you find. Steam expanding rapidly is equivalent of a massive bomb

GranimalSnake

No shit Sherlock. I can see my sarcasm was fruitless.

Crensch

There is no sarcasm on Voat.

water tends to explode on contact with lava. they're gonna make a big badda boom that'll be heard the world over if they pour enough into yellowstone.

WildOneinVt

The risk....you would not Risk setting it off and it is a Risk http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/rockyplanet/2017/08/31/2250904/

A year ago it was called stupid so why change course?

GranimalSnake

I was being facetious. Obviously digging into a supervolcano is fucking ridiculous.
