i'm more concerned that when a post is deleted there is no auto notification.

Empire_of_the_mind

yeah it really didn't need to be on /v/news , but I'm not of the opinion that these things matter all that much. I'm certain they matter less than open and free conversation.

I'm suggesting we solve this by creating a dedicated sub /v/relocated where posts that violate a /v/'s rules can be moved without impacting their site rank, discussion, etc. This seems to solve both problems.

As a mod of a few /v/'s I'd never delete something, off-topic, spam, anything, if it was generating hundreds of legitimate comments. That's the whole point of a site like this and /v/ "rules" are really just there to streamline and organize stuff. I can't comprehend why someone would think that was more important than a lively conversation. It's not as if we have a limited number of "slots" to post articles and this thing drowned out important posts about the latest Pluto picture or something.

So you have no problem with deleting the top post on the entire site because of a /v/'s rule?

That strikes me as an utterly ridiculous position to take if you purport to want to enable free and open discussion.

neonneophyte

good post but it seems to be in the wrong place. not really news.

Empire_of_the_mind

Does that seem like a good reason to censor it from the front page of Voat.co?

neonneophyte

It is a good reason to remove it from v/news

Empire_of_the_mind

That's not the question I asked.

neonneophyte

the question you asked is incorrect. you didnt post to the front page, you posted to v/news

Empire_of_the_mind

You're either super stupid or willfully avoiding the point. I'm pretty sure it's the second one but I'll consider the first one a possibility for now.

They are the same thing. That's the entire problem. There's a flaw in the /v/ moderator rights that gives the mod of any particular /v/ this ultimate power. As a mod I don't want this and as a user you should not want this. The purpose of my discussion here is to find a solution to this.

If you can't see why this is an important Voat issue you must be braindead.

neonneophyte

there is no problem with the front page and although there could be problems with moderation within a sub, deleting a post unrelated to news in v/news is not one.

nonoyesyes

It was pretty obviously not news. I think the argument can be made it should have been moved to another subverse where it was on topic but I'm not sure if that is something mods can even do.

Empire_of_the_mind

Right - I don't think we can do that right now. I've suggested as much, to deal with these cases (this was a preferred way of censoring content on Reddit). The idea would be to relocate to a dedicated /v/ but leave all other attributes of the post intact. This way the mod can remove it from their /v/ without removing it from visibility on the site.

Further, in a case like this, there is little harm in leaving it be. Once a post has taken off removing it should basically never be an option. I am the mod of several /v/'s and I think this is atrocious behavior.

It's the same problem with reddit... some idiot gets in first with the subverse name and now he or she is master of all things associated with that name. Some names are worse than others, with something like /v/news being as bad as the problem can get.

It can be overcome... look at /r/marijuana ceding to /r/trees ... but that takes years.

If I were the admin, and in light of what is going on over at reddit, I'd make these obvious subverse names no-moderator zones. Quick, simple solution.

p.s. /v/conspiracy exhibits the same problem. Let's create a subverse dedicated to conspiracies and then kneecap discussions about the most important one with rule #2! But we can let the users vote on the stylesheet lol!

Roundishbag

Then start your own subverse (with hookers and blackjack maybe) and if it's better, eventually people will go the for uncensored news.

Honestly, can we all just be above petty recriminations.

Edit: fat fingered a 'b', wanted 'h'

Empire_of_the_mind

yeah, that's what I'm saying. this post was a big discussion about stuff happening here that got a ton of attention. it seems to absolutely violate the spirit of the site to delete it outright with no discussion. I just wanted to call attention to that because people should know.
