I'm far from a vegan, but I must admit, I've never heard an argument this persuasive for becoming one.

I'm not sure I agree that veganism is the only way to save the earth, but I'm pretty sure it's the only way that everyone on earth gets to keep living, at least at these population numbers.

Supply and demand will correct these problems for the earth itself, but mammalian life might not be around to see it if a major change doesn't happen before the tipping point.

This chick

  1. Is hot
  2. Is smart as fuck
  3. Makes a really good video

I'd listen to her talk about anything

The whole bit about water seems pointless to me, it is not like the water disappears after being consumed and used. It is a cycle, and the water head thing I thought was to save up on money and not the environment. How does water hurt the environment anyways?

deathcomesilent

the water head thing I thought was to save up on money

You nailed that much, she seemed to kind of miss that.

As for water. Well, water is heavy, and it usually has to be moved. Moving water takes a good amount energy. Nuclear and (maybe) hydroelectric are the only power sources that I can think of that are both economically viable (can make you money), and are (in terms of multiple generations) sustainable, given the limited number of any kind given type of atom on this planet. Physics and chemistry are net-zero games, and the only way anything exists is by riding the metaphorical and literal waves, as opposed to trying to manufacture them.

TL;DR: water is heavy, and there's way too many humans for the size of the rock we live on.

ThingFish

I wonder how much water was used to brew the PBR she slams down her throat every weekend at punk shows.

ThingFish

"It's now beyond personal choice in allowing everyone their dietary preference".

Yeah but good luck trying to tell me and everyone else what we can and can not eat. And why no mention of Vegan's beloved soy products and their adverse effects on the body. I could be wrong but I heard soy was evil. I'd rather eat chicken.

Mopstorte

First of all, you don't have to eat anything containing soy as a vegan. I've been vegan for 3 months and have consumed soy a total of 5 times.

Second of all, you mention "adverse effects on the body", but haven't done any actual research on it. You say in your next sentence that you "heard soy was evil." What?! You heard, and that's it. I'm sure you also heard that cow milk is good for your bones and you heard that you need meat to become strong. Soy is certainly a lot healthier than chicken.

And finally, why are you on /v/conspiracy in the first place if you believe obvious propaganda perpetuated by the meat and dairy industries?

They now made it illegal to film in slaughterhouses in several states in the US, but I'm sure they're not going to lie about their products and spread misinformation about their competitors. /s

Your emotions are running a little high it seems. It's common among vegans...must be the lack of killing innocent things for personal consumption :).
I have no problem with veganism other than soy and the overly preachy annoying culture that exists. I could post several articles about how soy is not good for you but would that proof enough of anything? Probably not.
"Soy is certainly a lot healthier than chicken." Where are your links? You're guilty of the same thing you accused me of. No proof of research.... I'm on conspiracy because there are a lot of great points of view expressed here. I'm not particularly fond of pro vegan rants in the conspiracy forum but I'm accepting.

I'm not trying to have a debate about veganism and healthy eating, etc because it's not that important to me. It will basically be me googling shit that I believe and finding links that support those beliefs. That's how most internet debates work. I will continue to respond to you but just know your passion on this subject far outweighs mine as evidenced by your emotional response. It's so easy to upset a vegan. I was vegan and vegetarian for a little while too, in case you were wondering.

Go troll someone who doesn't see through your bullshit. It'll be more fun for everyone in this thread, yourself included.

drexhex

An actual solution for people like me who don't want to give up 95% of their diet would be lab-grown meat, which is likely possible with advancements in stem cell technology.

EDIT: I was exaggerating with the 95%... Closer to 60%? 75%?

I like meat, but I'll have a salad and power through veggies I'm not a fan of too.

cky_stew

Have you tried any meat-free alternatives? There is plenty of good shit out there that is cheaper and healthier than meat. Me and the GF didn't find it too hard to give up, although we still kept eating fish for a few months.

I do miss the taste of meat sometimes, but there are plenty of supermarket alternatives that emulate the taste of burgers, mincemeat and chicken almost perfectly.

I'm with you on lab grown meat though, I think I'd give up being a vegetarian for that shit!

drexhex

I have, and am not a fan. It's something I can stomach once in a while but I'd hate myself more by never eating what I really like.

JimmyJimRyan

95%? That's not healthy.

drexhex

boltsand

These guys would disagree. I don't really follow their view, but arguments can be made for any diet choice that someone makes.

Skaria

If 95% of what you eat consists of meat then you might want to reconsider your diet...

She's right in many aspects, but what an annoying video to watch !

The title is a bit of an exaggeration, I would say most environmentalists know already that eating meat is bad for the environment and act accordingly. Also she makes it sound like it's and and/or thing, where for example either you use less water in your home or you eat less meat, can we do both maybe ?

Mopstorte

I know many people that consider themselves environmentalists but have no idea that meat consumption is bad for the environment at all, or they don't know how bad it really is. I think that's the main target demographic for this video.

The "either you use less water in your home or you eat less meat"-thing was more for the sake of comparison/perspective, I think.

Why do you find it to be annoying?

vicarious

Why do you find it to be annoying?

For me the way she narrated was a little irritating, she spoke too fast and in a kind of condescending way. Too "hipsterish" for my taste, but I see how it may appeal to some people.

jamescurtis

i stopped watching because of the annoying...

deathcomesilent

Of course you found it annoying if you couldn't keep up.

Every single thing that I don't understand, will annoy me to no end. That's life. So by your logic, you shouldn't make it more annoying for the people that don't share your tastes.

vicarious

There the data, that's one thing. And then there's the way to present the data, that's another thing.

toobaditworks

I knew from the start: the glasses, the hair style, the shirt to show off her new tats, and the annoying condescending attitude. I didn't make it to any of the points she tried to make. I tried but I couldn't do it.

Skaria

She's had these tatoos for quite some time now. And there's nothing wrong with her glasses and her hairstyle.

I've watched Emily's videos for quite some time now and she really cares a lot about animals, there's nothing condescending about that.

jamescurtis

her body language and tone are condescending, basically its not because shes wrong, shes just an asshole about it :)
