You're right to a point. The go along to get along mentally works in communities of shared ethics and morality, as long as such communities have a universally applied and rigidly enforced moral hazard (such as peer shame, prison, or death for moral violators). However, our communities have removed both the universally applied moral hazard (rules for thee, but not for me) and also eliminated the commonly shared ethics.

On the other hand, moral relativism can work when a strict moral hazard is enforced for everyone equally, regardless of their individual beliefs or personal ethics.
