The different cycles of refugees, especially the big ellen pao push that started it all, folks left because of a lack of content and because free speech scared them. plenty of voaters still use reddit, I know re-poster types are lame but honestly it would probably be a healthy thing for us to have users who poach reddit content and deliver it here to the appropriate subs. If you want a clear picture in VOAT's traffic performance i suggest you keep track of subscribers count in v/whatever , it reached 10k seven months ago and it stands at 11.5k now .

They thought it was going to be reddit but with free speech so they swarmed here and set up subs that they could reign over like they do on reddit, but then they decided they liked traffic more than free speech and that people who liked free speech did not want mods to be gods so they went back to reddit where they belong.

A lot of what you are seeing is probably from when Voat was being attacked by bots that used "abandoned subs" to spam and flood the site since moderation was absent. Voat shut down pretty much every single sub that did not have any activity for a set amount of time to prevent them being used in future attacks.

People at the time could appeal to have subs unlocked or even transferred but that has not happened in a while.
