If so then it would be a real shame. Who they were, criminals, should be trumpeted to the whole world. And their crimes and punishment should be broadcast to all to show this will not be tolerated.

"Was" is singular, but you are referring to two people, so you need the plural "were." Your title should read, "Were George Bush and John McCain put to death?" I assume English is not your first language.
