My friend works for an electrical company, he says he can turn his phone "off" and then use his equipment to show electrical signals still setting off the meter

Neil_Kiggers

let me tell you this, my current smartphone is the last one I ever will buy.

FriedChicken

No, it's because Steve Jobs didn't like removable batteries, and the entire industry just follows what apple does.

The original iPods also had no removable batteries.

Shitt1ngMys3lf

This is just plain bullshit. The profit margins are much higher on the electronics than the battery. and eliminating the removable feature means a cost savings during manufacturing.

ibepokey

also, same reason why televisions don't turn off any more. only 'standby'

Hmmmm_m

Same reason they banned lead paint.

AlexProkhorenkoLives

Although you are right generally speaking there are a few phones with removable batteries just not very high end phones https://thedroidguy.com/2019/05/9-best-phones-removable-battery-2019-1079207

Lobotomy

Incorrect, it's a component of planned obsolescence. You can still be tracked with the battery removed from your device.

Conspirologist

Do you mean by cmos battery?

Lobotomy

That, and the capacitors keep the GPS radio alive for a decent amount of time. There's an NSA leak about it somewhere on wikileaks.

lordvain2

First thing I thought when I found this out.

Monsantos_Schlong

Not mine, got a ulefone armor 2 for $300 has a removable battery that lasts all day.

LightningAndTheSun

Taking a battery out of your phone doesn't do shit for spying, especially more so today. Just wait till 5G comes out in full force. Your entire home can be mapped in real-time with EM. They will even be able to tell if you have any firearms in the house, and be able to count how many rounds you have loaded and even what type of round it is. This is just a possibility based on a fundamental understanding of the technology, who knows how it will actually be used, but if the history of government is any indicator, we should expect a whole lot worse.

You will live to see man-made horrors beyond your comprehension

Conspirologist

OK. We are fucked then.

goatboy

...or you could stick it in a faraday's cage anytime you want to go dark...

shitlordin

Pretty sure it will still record whatever goes on around it even while it's off. As soon as it connects to a network it sends that data off.

Of course this is useful if you really need temporary privacy but don't think for a second that because it's not connected to a network it's not still recording.

goatboy

That’s fair. I’d recommend sticking it into a stainless steel container, like a drink shaker. Then roll it in a towel or blanket to further muffle the sound.

SirNiggsalot

Indeed that would permanently fix the problem.

petevoat

Laptops also the same.

Conspirologist

That's right. Laptops, iPads, smartphones. No more fucking batteries.

Drenki

Even if you take the battery out, the technology exists to power and turn on your phone remotely. And i'm not talking about wireless charging.

GreenSlug

I made a faraday bag for my phone. Just for testing purposes of course

Thornamajig

Get an RF shield bag to put it in

Putzmiester

This right here. Just leave the damn things at home. Good luck convincing the ladies to follow through on this though.

Conspirologist

Thanks. It looks cool.

hedgefundhog

Smartphones no longer have removable batteries?

crazy_eyes

Nope, even if you manage to crack the case open, the battery is soldered to the board

hedgefundhog

What makes and models are affected?

crazy_eyes

iPhones. For sure

hedgefundhog

iPhones have always been anti-user

14WordsToFreedom

All the top of the line ones. Some of the cheap android phones still have removable ones, but they’re also full of crapware.

0fsgivin

I'm pretty sure all you have to do is wrap your phone in aluminum foil and it cannot send or receive any signal.

Locked_Account

ITT, spooks deflecting.

ALIENS2222

Purism phone is supposed to have just that.

trotskyberg

Fingers crossed it is actually usable enough to become my main phone.

ALIENS2222

Same... Sadly I am only minimally skilled in Linux.

trotskyberg

No choice right now... But when Puri.sm is a choice, you won't have to be skilled with Linux to use it.

ALIENS2222

Yeah, I hope it is close...

sosat_menya_reddit

Soooo

Updating your Facebook, Twitter, and instagram accounts from your smartphone is even worse than just having a smartphone.

BillyBobBoJangles

Faraday case or bag. You're welcome.

GizaDog

We just put ours in another room and play Madonna music.

Problem solved.

Planetoftheclown

Keep in mind that cellphones has working GPS chips in them years before they were capable to giving customers access to the "feature", circa 1998 I believe. Smartphones weren't a thing until 2003 and not wide spread until 2007, yet every flip phone had a working GPS chip.

Cell/smartphones are not yours. Cell/smartphones are "theirs". I call it tattletech like anything that is called "smart" whatever. Smartphone, smartTV, smartFridge, smartLight, smartThermostat, smartAssistant.....none of it truly belongs to you in the sense that you are in complete control of it and it is designed to rat you out, to divulge all your little secrets.

THSenior

Prove it

FriedChicken

Pretty useful for 911

BoraxTheFungarian

I'm going to go ahead and guess that there is a chip in there that doesn't need an internal power source.

GrandNagus

Here you go m8, there are many different premade ones you can buy that look nicer, but I can't attest to their efficacy since many seem to have openings in them and arent perfectly enclosed.

For total privacy put it in a home made bag or container and leave it at home so it doesn't record and send it later.

https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Faraday-Cage

SirNiggsalot

Throwing it in a microwave and shutting the door will block all.signals too, like a farrady cage.

Elcycs

It's even more effective if you turn the microwave on for 1 minute.

lord_nougat

More effective still if you turn the microwave on for 15 minutes!

Fateswebb

All you have to do is wrap it in foil... There's a YouTube video where the guys tests this theory and sure enough he couldn't call or use his phone while wrapped in foil.

GrandNagus

It only needs to connect momentarily to another phone via wifi or bluetooth to send it's mac adress or IMEI numeber and the other nearby phone or router will report your location.

Were talking at most 200 bytes of information, if there is a gap and it has straight line of sight to the device it will successfully identify itself.

Fateswebb

There is no evidence that phones use this p2p style networking, this is completely theory. Also if it were true someone would have proven it by now.

GrandNagus

There are many different mesh network messaging systems that you can download right now, anything similar could be used and would only need to be active for a microsecond, and this is done in the phones private memeory, the SPU. This is similar to the intel management engine and AMD PSP. Exactly what these do know one knows, but we do know that they can command complete control over a system. And for sending something as little as 200 bytes it has more than enough processing power.

Phuc_Dat_Bich

No - you understand that while there’s a removable battery it’s entirely possible to have another little one tucked away to power a spy chip, right?

Battery life became the top concern as phones advanced and now they cram battery pieces into odd shapes and nooks to maximize.

Battery life is the REAL reason phones screens got so big and no one makes a smaller one - the extra size gives them room to cram enough battery in to make the phone last an entire day.

philomath

This and waterproof ness. It’s next to impossible to maintain a water-tight seal with a removable battery.

finix_666

I heard aluminium foil can block signal pretty well.

Atarian

Those metallised potato chip bags also work.

MaxVonOppenheim

A few layers completely blocks the signal. I've tried it and then tried calling the phone. You can buy special pouches too that do the same thing.

Conspirologist

It's called the Faraday cage.

SolidFoundations

Ikr... Surely building a Faraday cage and depositing your mobile phone into it will prevent any communication. At least during that time.

lipids

Communication, sure. Recording? Nope. Phones can determine your password by the different sounds keyboard keys make. The microphones are very sensitive and audio compresses well for storage until a transmit opportunity arrives.

glennvtx

You must change your operation security to adapt to your new normal. It may not only be your phone listening. You can hot air the mics off the phone's board, and use a pair of headphones for all your communication needs, with a physical mute button.

RoBatten

That's the problem right there. At some point you're going to power up the phone.

SolidFoundations

True.

theoldones

-phone turned off

-battery removed

-put into a metal/foil-lined container

-store it in another room when not in use

P33psh04h

That seems... excessive.

shitlordin

Especially since it likely records even while off and off the network. The second it's powered on and connects to a network it sends off all the data gathered during the off time.

Diggernicks

Don't get a smartphone...

turitelle

Agreed, I refuse to have one.

sinclair

It's so you have to replace the whole unit, instead of just the battery. Phones run over $200 these days, batteries are $40. It's part of the Right to Repair that Apple keeps fighting via DMCA. Basically, they want to keep stealing your money through planned obsolescence , which is becoming harder. They're scammers with little value now.

heretolearn

Capitalism baby woot woot

andrew_jackson

Based

Drenki

$40 is at the high end.

lipids

Batteries are $10.

rcb

Why not both? https://m.slashdot.org/story/138646 [from 2010]

But yes, business is always going to scam whenever it is profitable.

RoundWheel

Both is the answer. Those able to pay larger amounts on such devices are generally the ones they would want to spy upon.

sinclair

I'm sure it's as many things as they can do to screw the public at large. Wouldn't surprise me to find out our tax dollars went into paying them to do it.

NotALawyer

No. Its just cheaper in parts (5-15 usd per unit) to manufacture, and cheaper in labout required (up to 5 usd per unit) and batteries themselves are cheaper because they no longer need idiotproofing as they are shielded by the body of the phone (thinner, can save space on top of cost savings).

Gopherurself

I've always thought about this

fluhthreeex

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise and it's certainly not much of a stretch to suggest it.

What are phone co's going for that would require them to be built-in? Waterproofing? ..no. They haven't done that yet, and they could still do it with removable batteries. What about expensive re-servicing? Absolutely.

There isn't going to be one feature of a phone that's a "this only serves for spying and nothing else!" (aside from maybe wifi on the cpu, the IME, and all that good shit).. there will pretty much always be 'fairly ok' other justifications for the features.

arathans

yeah i tend to agree with this idea.

However, they are limiting the life cycle of their phones. my note 3 hardware is still better than some new ones and its now 5 years old, but ive had to replace the battery in it every two years. Like printers, lightbulbs, everything these days seems to be made to fail.

Lillah

My note 3 finally failed. Just replaced it with ...a note 3. The 4 was cheaped out and the 5 went to non-replaceable battery. No thanks.
We noticed the same life spans. About 2 yrs for a battery.

Le_Bucheron

Still using note4 after 4 years. Changed the original battery 2 months ago. Still fast enough for me.

Conspirologist

You are confusing planned obsolescence with government spying.

DeltaBravoTango

Or you are. I know the iPhone has a small secondary battery that keeps background activities running while the phone is dead, like the clock and the pedometer. I’m sure the spyware is run on it, too. I think most phones have something like that, but I can only speak for the iPhone.

Conspirologist

Everything with a processor has a secondary battery. If secondary battery dies, your computer is useless.

rcb

You mean why iPhones don't have removable batteries. That's entirely possible...

There was a scare among tech people a few years ago about "supercaps", high capacity capacitors that could perhaps keep the GPS running for awhile if the battery were removed.

spaceman84

I believe that it was recently discovered that phone location data is tracked when the device is "off" at least with some devices. I'll try to find an article.

Conspirologist

Yes, but maybe supercaps are more expensive.

Gopherurself

Well figure it out man shit
