The ideas in Star Trek were great, but the whole idea was demented. We are supposed to believe that normal, intelligent people are single. We see the crew of Star Trek on a 5 years long voyage. Even if they were all single in the beginning of the voyage, which is still implausible, they still could have become engaged during the first year of their voyage. Think about it.

You're wrong, actually. The Enterprise in the Next Generation was for married couples and children as well as for singles. In the Original Series the Enterprise was more of a research vessel on a dangerous mission, so you wouldn't expect there to be married couples in the crew.

Miles had yellow fever and got married. Worf got married, too, in DS9. TOS was much closer to the crew dynamics of military shows, so showing long-term coupling would have seemed beyond the regs (I got the impression they saved that for shore leave).

What are you talking about? Several of the crew had relationships including with each other. Also the crew is all military personnel supporting the families that come with them. The thousands of other people that are almost never featured in the show were the families.
