I think Jon Stewart had enough of the hollywood/DC world. He's not necessarily the "activist" type, but holds the events of 9/11 close to his heart.

He'll never publically say it's an inside job, but will fight for the rights of first responders.

I also think they chose Trevor Noah over him because SOMEONE didn't want a member of the media to ask a single tough question of the 2016 candidates. They needed ALL influential celebrities to jump on the Hillary train.

Jon Stewart chose to disappear to a farm & help animals. Colbert chose to suck Satan's cock on a nightly basis.
