Because they really would prefer not having to develop a whole nuclear arms program in order to get the proper respect due any sovereign state. But seems they can't get it without nukes, so at least they are using their milestones along that path as negotiating chips.

I think Iran wants to absorb a first strike. so they can have the higher ground when they fight back. I believe Iran already has Chinese nukes. They aren't bluffing when they say Israel will be destroyed in 30 minutes. You can't destroy Israel in 30 minutes with ground troops. So they must have something up their sleeve.

I agree, they either already possess or CAN easily obtain eithe Russian or Chinese nukes. That much is not to be doubted or argued. It must be taken as a given.
