Perhaps this could be all settled if the public could see the video of what happened, or even a description rather than "that's not what happened". But that's not how "journalism" works, I guess.

Who doesn't embellish their stories from time to time? It really shouldn't be a crime. remember the story of the old man who walked up hill both ways to school in the snow everyday? Pretty much the same thing all the old men do this.
