Which is exactly the same thing the reddit admins think

Lumidaub

There is a difference between gently setting boundaries in specific, justified cases (Nazi symbolism) and wanting to shelter your kids from anything that might hurt them (possibly offensive content).

Not everything is black or white.

Just like the confederate flag, its not about who flew it then, its about who flys it now.

That said, I think freedom of speech is a better idea. The fact we try to ban it just gives more power to the symbols.

Torretiger

kind of retarded to ban all symbols used for single tank divisions. Because the Nazis liked them I'm not allowed to use those symbols anymore...

Thanks Adolf

You won't get arrested for using an upward arrow giving directions, but if you print it on a shirt and wear it on a neonazi demonstration, you might get legal trouble. According to the text it was used by the Hilterjugend (Hitler youth) and a volounteer division os the SS.

They're not going to prevent me from using this one and these ones , or I'm going to scream 'muh discrimination of 'muh ancestry and heritage.

Okay, I think this is an issue of culturally different views on free speech and self expression. The US for example holds these things above anything else so it would only make sense to allow the use of these symbols no matter what context. Germany in contrast drew the conclusion from its past that you cannot let anyone say and promote anything they want, that there need to be SOME boundaries on personal freedom and self expression to prevent especially fascist ideas from spreading.

It's just differences in culture.

To further illustrate this: I get immensely weirded out when US media mention the names of crime victims or suspects. Because we don't do that and we think it's important to protect the individual's identity, more than to inform ther public of somebody's potential crime.

So Germany is the reddit of countries?

Lumidaub

If that means not wanting Nazis promoting their shit, then yes. Sure. Whatever.

Lumidaub

And how is this a conspiracy? What about this is being hidden by shadowy powers?

These symbols have been abused by our grandparents and people who use them in Germany today are VERY likely to want to use them in the same way they did. We don't want that to happen. So we accept that there may be a minority of people who may want to use these symbols as they were meant before the Nazis and who cannot do so because we want to prevent that other, far larger group from flaunting and promoting their racism.
