Not really. The entire notion is based on snitches and liars more than giving up secrets. Secrets are always discovered sooner or later.

But messing with loyalty is really makes people pissed. And you do not need to be in a secret society to get your ass handed to you for being a snitch.

Yeah. I am really leaving out what it all implies. So, we know many of these have existed and many still do. We know that they are notorious for providing unmerited advancement to fellow members. This is promoted in movies and TV to lure people in even further. And these were the prototype intelligence agencies. Unfortunately, they were all amateurs, and were unaware of counterespionage, double agents, and infiltration. They didn't know that these things they were leaving around for future generations were weapons in the hands of those who had more patience, and a broader view of history. And these same secret societies were key players in the founding of intelligence agencies across western civilization.
