Pretty sure it was the Chinese in our country's buying it up and shipping it to China, probably to relatives. So I blame the chinks.

canbot

You simply underestimate how absolutely stupid normies are. They feel anxiety and fear and want to prepare but have absolutely no idea how. They hear "stock up" but don't know what they should stock up on. And so their brain automatically starts looking for products that they will definitely use even if there aren't any shortages, and that will last forever without going bad. TP is on everyones short list. They still buy canned food and rice, just different varieties. There is ramen, and past, and noodles, and mac n cheese for them to pick from and everyone picks a different one so there is no shortage. But there is a lot less toilet paper in the store than all those other items combined because TP takes up a lot more space.

They also buy way more because it is cheap and last forever. Where as the food will go bad eventually so they don't want more than 2 months supply.

The media may be making it worse, but they are simply reporting on what shelf is empty. They weren't reporting empty shelves until they became empty. The stupidity was there before the media.

22915193?

First I heard of it was the Hong Kong TP thefts.

https://fortune.com/2020/02/06/hong-kong-coronavirus-face-mask-shortage-toilet-paper/ this article suggests it was social media rumors that started it.

Gravspeed

That might be the earliest date I've seen.

meowski

Yea so answer the question, Q Tard, who was it?

Friken KYS

mehwah

I read in an old book ('how to prosper in the coming bad times' or some such crap) that the 1st Toilet Paper Run was caused by a DJ making a joke that there was a shortage, and that caused a shortage. The book was like from the mid 80's or earlier I think.

I kinda was wondering if its a meme test to see how much the public uptake the programing from the news- there is NOT a shortage here, so maybe its just a way to make everyone think everyone else is panicking..... funny word pan- ick

Gravspeed

This guy gets it

TheBone

Has any shown up on Ebay and at what price? Just wondering if a 4 pack of Charmin has hit $50, yet?

TheBone

Who cares? It was the stupidity of the human race that's so damn appalling and I have to live amongst them, from time to time. Fuckin' jeesh....

Empire_of_the_mind

It came from Hawaii. In previous incidents Hawaiians have run out of TP and they knew this and immediately stocked up once getting wind of the happening. Half of them are asians so they were on this early. The videos and pictures of them stocking up on TP hit the internet and everyone copied them as lemmings are apt to do.

The thing about it is that Hawaii is in the middle of the pacific ocean and all their supplies are shipped in by boat, so supply shortages are real. TP is cheap and easy to produce and stores well and forever, so there are enormous quantities around in the US and more can be made easily. There is zero chance it will run out in the continental US.

4freedom

Why wouldn't you just jump your poopy ass into the ocean?

Empire_of_the_mind

you actually make a decent point

TheBone

The whiplash of demand side economics will see it run short here just like .22 ammo did during The Idiot Supreme's reign.

BearDolphin1488

Nigger supreme

Empire_of_the_mind

it stores really well. i wouldn't be surprised if most TP is produced in a big run once a year then the paper factory switches to other products.

TheBone

My BIL worked until he retired from a paper factory. It's made day in and out along with many other paper products. It's all math due to supply and demand economics. Demand side will outrun the supply side in times like this when the industry is caught off guard and may take a while to catch up just like it did with .22 ammo due to so many folks hoarding it. It's doubtful you'll see TP for resale on ebay and other sites just yet, though, like .22 did by those wanting 3-5 times its value but, hey...folks might need rent money in the next 2 weeks so ya never really know.

Empire_of_the_mind

the difference is that the raw materials for paper production are much easier and quicker to source than for .22 ammo. As Rotteuxx says, the bigger risk for supply in non-import products is staffing.

TheBone

True but the demand is faaaaaaaaaar greater for TP than ammo yet ammo still vanished because of panic, stupidity and in the ammo's case...greed, and demand side outrunning productions. It'll take a little while for the paper companies to restructure their work force and productions needs to even begin to up the TP productions and that will take away from the other paper needs, which still have a certain demand quota to be met. The materials aren't the problem, it's the people at all ends of a supply and demand economy that often only maintains a 1.5 - 3 supply for most products. Besides supply there's storage to think about too that also costs to maintain and is not feasible when all things run as they should. Everything changed will affect something else, also needed, so it's real easy for demand to crush supply in a panic. It's pretty much how the great depression happened in a nutshell.

Rotteuxx

I'm a sub contractor for a big mill in Canuckland, they canceled all onsite work, have only operators & a few maintenance personnel on hand and they're taking everybody's temperature at the gate.

They are adamant about not shutting down while minimizing all risks.

Doubleplus

I remember seeing a post about a news remote where they de-stocked the toilet paper to make it look like they were sold out. Does anyone remember that?

KatTheHun

People here are hoarding because they are afraid all the stores will be shut down... not out of stock but closed.

SparklingWiggle

It's not a psyop. It is dumb niggers that think the flu means diarrhea. I've seen the hoarders and in every case they were niggers and 3rd world shitskins. 85 IQ thinking they are going to shit for days.

meowski

I think people are just fat and we never knew what an excessive amount of toilet paper they use until now.

bluedeath

Just like the Ice Bucket Challenge

PalmSprings21

I like to wipe my ass with toilet paper. Bought several cases a week ago when it looked like it would be rationed. Now it is rationed in CA. What's wrong with being prepared?

SparklingWiggle

Why would you suddenly need cases of toilet paper? Did you have 2 months of everything else? I think you ju,ped on the panic bandwagon and believe the flu will cause the shits.Fucking boomer.

MrDarkWater

its for a quarantine, not the shits. you idiot.

SparklingWiggle

I don't think you grasp the full picture. Stores weren't running out of anything else. How long does it take you to run through a roll of toilet paper? A day? The average bulk pack of TP has 48 rolls (that can equal 108 regular rolls) so that is 48 days of TP. Do you have 48 days of food and other supplies? Do you think OP does? OP bought several cases. Do you think OP bought months and months of everything else but forgot TP until the last minute? Was OP going to just buy TP during the quarantine or did OP hear it was being bought out and like a colossal faggot go out and buy several cases perpetuating the panic? I'm gonna stick with OP is a colossal faggot.

MrDarkWater

Yes, I've got food. Many around me have food and water: we've lived through enough hurricanes to have learned our lessons there. But toilet paper was my personal weakness in my preps, so I stocked up 2 months ago when China started burning tens of thousands of bodies and welding people in their apartments.

Most people forget about toilet paper. But people have ride, flour, canned goods...

And then the media showed a person with a cartload and everybody realized their own conversationist if relying on systems outside their control.

It's there panic? Yes. Should there me? If you aren't prepared, you might panic.

Quarantine begins Wednesday.

SparklingWiggle

Most people (outside of Voat) don't have shit on hand. Millions have nothing but a couple of days. And you would be blown away by the number of people that don't have food to prepare and buy almost everything from restaurants and only have leftovers.

All the people I have seen buying bulk TP were niggers and immigrants who probably ran out of that shit when their governments turnover.

MrDarkWater

Ok, so what's your point?

SparklingWiggle

That OP is a colossal faggot.

MrDarkWater

But he predicted that he would need stock before it dried up ... and then it dried up.

Good luck with your Dirty ass

SparklingWiggle

Oh, I have toilet paper, I always have a stock of toilet paper. I wasn't concerned at all when it started disappearing. I am stocked on generally everything all the time. I did just recently buy a new gun of a new caliber so I had to buy ammo recently which kind of sucked. My wife thought I was being crazy the way I always want to keep stocked up. She would even let us run low on stuff because it irritated her. Guess who won that war? She won't say shit, ever again.

TheBone

Fuck you and your goddamn boomer bullshit you fucking retard. You obviously don't have a clue as to who keeps you in diapers, dumbass.

PalmSprings21

kek, I'm no boomer, but you can call my father one and he won't care...meanwhile we can wipe our asses and eat what we want to eat...so fuck off, nigger

SparklingWiggle

I called him a "fucking boomer" which should have been an indication that I, myself, am not one; which can only lead to the conclusion that you are a dumb nigger.

Gravspeed

I'm not saying you shouldn't.... But to all the people buying 4 mega packs of ass wipe, I'm pretty sure they don't have enough food to make that much shit. It's just stupidity.

PalmSprings21

We have enough food, enough toilet paper, for about a year. And we can blow out your knees with shotgun shells if you try to take it.

Gravspeed

That's the spirit brother. Aim higher than the knees though.

mostlyfriendly

Nah. Just in time inventory + lemming behavior patterns.

Simply stated:

Paper products are bulky. Shelf space is expensive. As such, the local stores only carry enough for a few days of sales. So, if even 25% more people buy TP on a given day, it will run out on the local shelves.

So ... a few idiots did that and then the lemmings followed.

Couple this with the fact that it doesn't 'go bad' and it gives the lemmings a sense of 'doing something about the problem'.

Gravspeed

But do you think it's roots are organic? The runs on water and disinfectant make sense, toilet paper doesn't...

mostlyfriendly

I do.

Just because it is so easy to have a run on large bulky items that also happen to have a long shelf life.

Our supply chains are very fragile. It is a fascinating field of study all in itself.

I'll give you a specific example that I've lived though being in a hurricane zone.

Given: At any given moment, over 50% of the refined gas is in auto fuel tanks. (This is true ... our refineries, pipelines, distribution hubs, etc are all run on just in time.)

So: If we all went out and 'topped up' our tanks tomorrow - the nation would be out of refined gasoline.

Now, without extra consumption and/or a destruction in the supply chain, then in a ~week, the gas stations would be refilled.

But, gas is heavy / dangerous / expensive / has a limited shelf life. So ... gas shortages typically don't happen unless a hurricane is heading in and then the outage is regional.

The paper products will be back. Production hasn't halted and trucks are rolling. So, in a few weeks, everything will be back in stock. (There is only so much paper product one can hoard before everyone runs out of space.)

The paper products executives might ramp some extra production in the short term, but they know that for the next ~12 months their sales will be well below average ... because consumption hasn't changed.

Gravspeed

That's what I'm getting at, who was the first?

Murphman64

Nobody has been able to answer that question. Who started the TP insanity? What caused everyone to fly to the store for just that and water?

rspix000

and ramen in my area. I guess if you eat a bunch of ramen, you'll need a bunch of TP

thisisarealusername

Its the social media giants flexing their influence. Seeing if what they have the ability to do

Gravspeed

Exactly, but who was the first?

thisisarealusername

They're working together, as we've seen regularly for a half decade

voatsecurityguard

When the aliens arrive you'll understand... It will also be clear why we've all been hoarding plastic bags from the grocery-store.

trust the plan.

Gravspeed

I thought everyone knew about the plastic bag thing... Is that not why they started charging for them?

voatsecurityguard

shhhh. reveal it when the time is right.

Gravspeed

Seriously though, I do think the TP thing is a psyop.

voatsecurityguard

ok. a Koch bro s plan to raise GP profits?

Gravspeed

More like a stupidity test

Neskuaxa

Why do we do that plastic bag thing

voatsecurityguard

You'll find out.... Bring that jar of assorted screws and nuts and bolts too... just in case.

Gringojones

I don't know if I can carry all of mine. I should have been hoarding wagons too.
