The children should learn that inter-species sexual relationship between a pig and a frog is against nature and can not last. Also it's a vehicle to teach them about divorce...many kids have to go through it.

I imagine the message they're supposed to take away is that kids going through a similar situation will have something they can relate to and hopefully it will give them a way to healthily contextualize a pretty messed up situation.

I don't know if you think it's going to harm the kids because then they'll be aware of the existence of divorce and they should be shielded from such things. I don't really see a problem.
