Doubt this has anything to do with content. Registering email addresses makes connecting a person's identity to their account becomes infinitely easier. Then sell the info from their account to advertisers and the NSA just like Facebook, Google, and other major sites. As Reddit grew it was bound to happen. Wonder what other schemes they have to get users to register emails, or how long until it just becomes mandatory.
