I don’t think you can just use previous data on the effects of unemployment in this case. A lockdown is different from a recession. Unemployment payments have been increased. When the lockdowns end people have their old jobs back. They don’t have to go find new ones. If the whole country reacted as swiftly and harshly as New York did, we would be much better off now. The only people who are still unemployed in NY are those directly connected to mass gatherings like movie theaters or stadiums. Everyone else is back to work now, either virtually or with masks. This event doesn’t accurately fit the model of other spikes in unemployment.

The damage and loss of life directly and indirectly caused by the lockdowns is massive. We've never seen anything like this since the Great Depression. And the tragedy is, it was all completely unnecessary.
