Liberals will likely claim something along the lines of economic collapse and them being fusion centers for peoples needing help.

Being trillions in debt is - well it's complicated. Just keep in mind that when treasurys mature, yes there is a dollar payout to the holder. However, those dollars have to be spent somewhere and would eventually make it back to their home.

There is always chatter here and there about China dumping treasurys. China is actually fucked whether they dump or not - either way, those dollars have to be spent somewhere. If they hold them to maturity, it's basically a guaranteed purchase of US goods. If they dump them, then the price tanks and they can be scooped up for less than maturity value. Either way, the US wins.

Now, if the dollar was backed by some type of commodity or physical asset like gold, this scenario would not be possible because those things don't have to return to the US to have value.

Don't get me wrong, it's definitely a frightening idea. But the alternative is equally frightening. If we can't reign in pollution, resource consumption, and other systemic threats - like nukes, chem/biological warfare, AI, etc. - we're doomed.
